Description: { Confounding Variable } is a single-channel video that explores long-forgotten transgression and the fallibility of one's own recollections.

Making use of multiple video layers and time distention editing, the video calls into question the validity of one's memory while expressing regret and ambivalence over the possibility of indiscretion. In the void that memories have failed to occupy, doubts as well as fragmentary and contradictory images remain. In depicting the past in this manner, the video resituates the realm of memory as a site of uncertainty and self-interrogation.

Description: Artists reflect upon life experiences through personal narrative and a series of interviews. Generational gaps are analyzed throughout, and the way the American Dream has evolved forms the construction of the piece.

Four young students strive to represent their understandings of the American dream through narrative, various interviews, and analyzation of the current and past generations. Each student does this through his or her personal experiences or stories of their upbringings, creating vivid descriptions of what the American Dream truly means. Each story contrasts with one another, displaying different views and perceptions of what the American Dream means to each student. Finally, the piece wraps up with a series of interviews which compare and contrast different generation's ideas of what the American Dream is, showing how it has evolved throughout time.

Description: And One For All is a radio piece which explores the concept of self-identity as perceived in the framework of a group.

Using narrative and interviews, it tells three stories that view group identity in different ways--being a small part of something large, being a large part of something small, and dealing with having no group whatsoever.

Steve describes how he and his basketball team almost won. Ezra details being highly involved in Drama Club. Cory finds himself in an existential quandary, having no group to identify himself with. The link submitted will be improved upon soon.

Awakening was written by Emily Blessing and Chris Bocast for performance at the 2010 Earth Day Celebration held at the Overture Center in conjunction with the Nelson Institute Annual Earth Day Conference. Asked to take textual inspiration from a Wisconsin writer, we chose Ben Logan’s The Awakening Land upon the suggestion of Mary Devitt. The work is a continuous piece, in three parts. Originally performed and recorded live with acoustic piano and electric guitar, with a backing track on environmental sounds from Wisconsin, this final version also features Ben Willis on double-bass. Emily and Chris perform at the Memorial Union Terrace for this year’s Earth Day April 22 at 5 PM.

1. South Wind

“In the night, the wind would go around to the south.

It was a soft wind, moving the tops of the bare trees, but not giving the deathly cold rattle of winter to the branches.

Go outside and there were new sounds…”

2. Immersion

“First a faint, rustling, restless sound, always familiar, always half forgotten, always a new discovery.

It was the sound of running water, a thousand trickles on all sides as the melting snow began to form streams, seeking lower ground, beginning a journey toward the far-off sea.

Description: This Decorated Journal was originally an assignment for Dr. Roberta Hill’s course titled: AIS 450 Creative Native Process.

The object was to address an issue of race from two different perspectives. I chose to focus on an event in my life that spoke to racism, stereotypes, prejudice and fear. The journal contains family photographs of my parents, grandparents and daughter. I took the background photographs, which reflect aspects of my culture and my connection to the world. I used Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat for this project. The events described in this journal have been life changing for me. As a result, I now question all assumptions I have about socio-economic status, sexual orientation, skin color, ethnicity, age, religious belief, gender and ability. And, instead of employing stereotypes to understand the world around me, I consider the Lakota saying, Mitakuye Oyasin, which means, we are all related…all relatives.

Now in its ninth year of publication, Curb has targeted smart, bold women throughout Wisconsin with fascinating and relevant stories that both inform and entertain. This year’s staff took into special consideration the evolving role of print in the digital landscape. Description: “DNA Replication Made Frizzy” animates the process of DNA replication using legos as nucleotides and gloved hands as enzymes.

Each enzyme is represented using a different color glove, while each nucleotide is represented by a different color lego. This tutorial specifically focuses on transcription and the essential enzymes involved. The sequences of nucleotide addition and enzymatic joining or cleavage proceed in specific directions and in specific orders. Ms. Frizzie, a whimsical, funny character, guides the audience through the sequence of events that occur during transcription, beginning with a single strand of DNA and resulting in a replicated strand of DNA.

Description: Dolphin’s Cry is inspired by the documentary film, The Cove, which uncovered the Japanese massacre of dolphins.

I felt very sad seeing them crying and trying to get away from the fishermen’s net and spears. By the time the cove’s water turned blood red, I was horrified and wanted to help them and imagined holes in the nets that they could escape through. This game introduces players to the dolphins’ situation in a child-friendly way where players have an opportunity to save the dolphins from their trouble. Use the arrow keys to move the dolphin to go through the layers of nets and rejoin your family.

Description: The films of several famous movie directors inspire my digitally designed textile patterns. For each director I have watched several of his or her films and taken notes on their style and any repetitive motifs appearing throughout the films.

The first director I chose was Quentin Tarantino and I am going to tackle John Hughes next. I then create an inspiration board with images, sketches, and information to motivate the design process. From there I develop motifs that I feel capture the style and feel of the films. I have to keep in mind that the motifs will be put into a repeating pattern and try to envision where these textiles would be used; bedding, clothing, etc. For each director and set of films I am creating a collection of four different patterns using Adobe Photoshop and a textile industry software, Pointcarre.

Description: Service Canines play a crucial role in educating humans about what it means to be human.

Jacques Derrida writes eloquently to problematize the binary of animal/human in an effort to enlighten people about the reasons that we continually engage in violence towards one another and other species. Although canines have been recognized for centuries as able to experience reality, in both imaginative and symbolic frames of reference, such as witnessed by Levinas’ testimony to the canine Bobby in the concentration camp, humans have dangerously refused to recognize their contributions to life worlds. This visual representation of my service partner Mocha stands as testimony to the canines’ 0ability and desire to educate and transform the inhumanity of our “humanist” frame of reference. His presence in the various social milieus of human society questions a traditional western metaphysics of presence and how we recognize reality. He will present as teaching eighth grade, supporting students with various differences, and working at a hospice.

Description: The Bistro Project was part of the Interior Design II curriculum at UW-Madison in the Fall of 2010.

Located in Spring Green, WI the site is a 2,000 square foot old schoolhouse currently being used as a photography studio. The goal of this project was to create a warm and inviting environment that would be welcoming to locals, members of the American Players Theater, and tourists alike. Open from March through November, the bistro was to be a seasonal place of respite offering healthy, locally grown meal options; a change of pace from many of the other restaurants in town. The chef and menu have their roots in the French style, so this greatly influenced the design. Other elements having an impact on the design were the enormous southern facing windows in the dining room and the existing architectural style. The design intent was to be bright, open, and easily translatable from day to evening with a flick of a light switch and swapping of table settings. The result is an elegant yet friendly restaurant that remains true to the architecture while incorporating a hint of a contemporary French aesthetic. These renderings were produced using a combination of AutoCad Architecture 2011 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Description:“LIDS” is an animation created in Maya and compiled in After Effects. This was my first attempt at animating in Maya during a short summer class. Our assignment was to create a robot character and simply animate it doing something.

The goal for “LIDS” was to give emotion to the robot and create a lovable character. The end result is hopefully a character that someone can sympathize with and enjoy watching in the short amount of time it takes to view the video.

Description: The "White School House" in Spring Green, Wisconsin presented an interesting opportunity for the design of a bistro that would offer fresh and local cuisine to residents and visitors of the small town.

From when it was built in 1887, to the late 1980's the small space operated as a school for the children of Spring Green. In the design for a bistro that would take over the space, myself and the owner shared the vision of paying homage to all the people that had been taught there over the years, and to the character and structure of the building itself. The design is open and very functional, with distinct spaces and a warm and welcoming comfortable atmosphere.

Description: This project explores the interaction of a multitude of materials with light, in both natural and staged environments.

The process of shooting this work provided an additional challenge. Using the non-digital medium of film, I was supplied with a light meter to determine exposures needed for the different situations I filmed in, unsure of how the camera had captured these images until I received the developed film back. Through editing it was my attempt to capture a sense of self-reflexivity, consistently reminding the viewer to examine the relationship of what is visually in the frame with the medium used to acquire those images. This project was made for CA: Intro to Media Production and shot on a Bolex Film Camera.

Description: Restaurant design for a small hotel opening in New York City. The client has asked for a modern, youthful New York concept that can be carried throughout the space and allows for dining and lounging.

The design of “Loft” is a juxtaposition of industrial old world New York and the minimalistic Lofts of modern day. Unadorned old world materials such as wood, concrete, and metal create an edgy feel while softened with a crackling fire, rugs, bookcases, and warm textures. Loft is a space to enjoy a high end meal with close friends in ultimate comfort. The digital renderings for Loft were created by building a 3D model of the space in AutoCAD Architecture and then rendering the image in Adobe Photoshop.

The podcasts are intended for general audiences; the entire series is available at UW’s iTunesU site. They are intended to be entertaining and informative.

Mercury has been a continual presence in the terrestrial environment since the formation of the earth. People began finding uses for mercury before recorded history, and it was seen as a useful and often mystical element by many cultures around the world. Alchemists in China, India, and Europe all studied and experimented with mercury. Medical treatments using mercury were employed to treat various ailments before the development of modern science. Mercury was used in many industries, including hat-making, though it probably did not have anything to do with Lewis Carroll's Mad Hatter, as is popularly thought. By the 20th century, people began to recognize the toxicity and potential dangers of dealing with this potent element.

Description: The objective of this video clip is to evoke thoughts and feelings about an interior design restaurant project, completed in Interior Design 4 during the fall semester of 2010.

The video takes the 3D model created for this project and animates it so the viewer can get a feel for the space. Along with the animations are other images and clips (licensed by Flickr for educational use) used to complement the animation to create the experience of being in the space. In addition to the video clip are presentation boards that explain the entire project, from concept statement to finished design. The video was created with the use of 3D Studio Max and iMovie. The presentation boards were created with the use of Adobe CS5.

Description: There are many "random" health factoids hovering around us. Incorporating them into our individual lives, or not, depends on whether they resonate with our goals, values or needs. The Beverage Survey provides a relevant nutrition message using interactivity.

Adolescents are the intended users of The Beverage Survey. Teens new independence and spending power makes them a target for ads, so soft drink consumption spikes in these years. Messages that "soft drinks aren't good for you" are not relevant because teens feel immortal. However, connecting the message to something they care about, appearance, may help the user find meaning in the health information. This award “encourages faculty to integrate Digital Media Assignments into their curriculum so students can connect course materials to larger questions, in and out of the classroom.” Our assignment was to make a short documentary about a significant actor within the juvenile justice system. The role that we selected is found within the public school environment, Police Liaisons. We critically researched the legal background of this role and developed a story board and a multi-media presentation in which we would reveal the realities of this role in contrast with our research.

Setting her shears into the water, the Gardener surveys her work with neither satisfaction nor disappointment; neither favoritism nor bias. She watched the new buds as they grew, knowing that when they aged, she would return them to the earth as well.

The Grim Reaper is often portrayed as a dark figure bearing a scythe, cutting down lives and collecting their souls; but if you view the Reaper as a groundskeeper, trimming the grotto that is ‘life’ with gardening shears, would that be false?

Description: In my project, I have aimed to explain the concepts of numeracy, dataveillance, and the algo-numeric double through a story that contains aesthetic and narrative conventions of film noir.

The title of my comic as well as the choice to have traces of red throughout the piece is a play upon Shakespeare's famous line, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." My work explores this quote, or more specifically, whether or not being defined by a number and associations with one's name effects identity in the modern world. While Shakespeare asserts that only being, not name, matters, I suggest in that name and number are greatly significant in that they are intrinsically linked to, and influence being.

The character Rosie hates the Information Age and believes that her digital traces overwhelm her real identity. As Detective Ace attempts to solve her case, the characters and readers learn concepts from the helpers along the way. Shakespeare asserts that name does not matter, only being but the ultimate statement of A Rose by Any Other Number is that name and number do matter in that they are intrinsically linked to being. Rather than diminish one’s identity, a data body and signature are part of one's identity. Deleting them is nearly impossible and would result in removing oneself from the context of society. The hackers’ statements provide realistic solutions and the last frame of the comic, in which Rosie disappears and leaves a slip of paper that says, "Call me, 6309277327" expresses her acceptance of their sentiments. On a literal level she asking the detective to phone her, but metaphorically she is calling herself (and defining herself by) a number.

This project in particular was inspired by a senseless act by a police officer in my hometown neighborhood in Chicago. This police officer murdered a teenage boy with a gun shot to the nose, claiming he mistakenly suspected the young man's mobile phone for a gun. Description: In making my work, I tend to jump back and forth between traditional painting media and digital forms.

I find this juxtaposition to be an important factor that helps push the boundaries of my art making. Description: Warrens Steak + Seafood was designed as a new and updated restaurant for the Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin. The main concept for the design focuses on the idea of bringing people together and creating an integrated space with the adjacent hotel and outdoor area. The preliminary design for the space began with client interviews, case studies and research followed by schematic design drawings to better determine a final solution. Floor plans, elevations and renderings were produced in AutoCAD Architecture 2011, Illustrator, and Photoshop; the final presentation was completed in InDesign.

The project assignment was to create a strong design concept and skillfully address all aspects of the design, from graphic design through accessories to the custom bar and interior space. The concept is that natural luxury comes to Madison. An elegant dance is played between West and East. Nature provides a perfect decoration for luxury, combining Western culture and Oriental nature. People experience a different atmosphere featuring Oriental style and Western neoclassicism overlooking beautiful Capital Square. Through the interpretation and transformation of a variety of bamboo forms, the restaurant displays different elements which come from the same source.
